Freedom--May 28, 2012

If you were to walk past a wheelchair, you might think of it as a loss of freedom.  We say "confined to a wheelchair."  But if you couldn't walk, a wheelchair would be a symbol of freedom.

What can go wrong with a wheelchair?
1.  If it doesn't properly fit you, your posture may worsen and lead to serious health problems.
2.  You can develop pressure sores from sitting too long in a wheelchair.  Serious pressure sores could kill you.
3.  Your wheelchair may not maneuver well outside.
4.  Someone may sell your wheelchair on the black market before it is given to you.

These are some of the problems the Church has encountered as it has gained experience in providing wheelchairs.  So, now:

1.  Specialists take time off from their vocations and come to train local people how to properly fit someone for a wheelchair.
2.  The Church purchases and provides special cushions to prevent pressure sores.
3.  The Church offers "Rough Rider" wheelchairs as well as standard wheelchairs.  The Rough Riders can maneuver over curbs and other rough terrain.
4.  Serial numbers and a simple tracking system prevents losing wheelchairs to the black market.

On Monday, May 28th, Kelvyn and Kay Cullimore met with us and the Montenegro Red Cross to discuss a wheelchair project.  We hope to have a wheelchair training and provide wheelchairs next November or in the new year.

We love working with our Red Cross.

  1. The Friend magazine had an article about Humanitarian Aid this month, including wheelchairs. My kids enjoyed reading it, knowing that you are on a humanitarian mission.
